The Italians: I am from a very large Italian family therefore my Italian roots run deep. Because of this familial connection I am understandably moved each time I visit Italy. Even though I have only visited twice, the country and its people are both familiar and comfortable to me. Because of this connection I do not want my photos to be typical touristy shots. When I returned home from my last visit I took a closer look at some of the old family photographs. The parallels between my travel photos and my family photos were, to me, notable. In each of these ten collaborative diptychs my family members are on the left. These photographs were taken in New York in the early to mid 20th century. The photographers are unknown to me. I scanned these images and chose to use them “as is”. On the right are the photographs taken by me of people whose paths I’ve crossed in various Italian cities in 2015 and 2018. Each photo separately is frozen in time yet, together, the images are timeless. Putting together these diptychs helped me elevate my travel shots and, at the same time, honor my family.
